Turnbull Stakes 2017 featured the all conquering mighty mare Winx at Flemington on Saturday making it 21 consecutive wins. How good was she in the Turnbull Stakes? Unfortunately my punting didn’t follow suit. It was a tough day at the office and despite a couple of the larger bets getting up in Interlocuter and Freddie Fox Trot it was ultimately a bit of a disappointing day.

It shaped up as being a tricky one and that is how it played out. I am really looking forward to this Saturday. It is a mouth watering day with the Caulfield Guineas program in Melbourne and of course the inaugural running of The Everest in Sydney at Randwick. First of all though, let’s see if we can find some coming winners from Saturday’s 2017 Turnbull Stakes Day.

Flemington

Race 2 – Suggested Bets – Icon Of Dubai & Hulme

Winner: – Snitzepeg

The Overs God again showed his true colours here. I was on Icon Of Dubai at $11 and he ended up starting $3.70 equal favourite, so I was pretty much doomed from the start. Snitzepeg produced a bit of a surprise in being able to salute with the eye catcher of the race being Bravo Tango who looks to be a pretty talented commodity. I would be slightly forgiving of both Rellson and Hulme who both ended up out very wide in the straight which I am not sure was the “A” ground. Interestingly this race was run in quicker time than the two other 1400m races on the day so it might have some substance to it.

Race 3 – Suggested Bets – Animalia & Weather With You

Winner: – Main Stage

I found the horse the market found in Animalia who was heavily backed and he had every possible chance but simply wasn’t good enough. Main Stage was probably outside of Winx in the Turnbull Stakes the best win of the day. This was a pretty testing gallop and it certainly exposed a few with Main Stage proving the superior stayer coming from last to gun down Cliff’s Edge in the final stages. You would only think Main Stage would continue to improve going forward and will eat up the 2500m of the Derby in a month’s time.

I certainly can’t see anything from this race beating him again if they couldn’t beat him on Saturday. He is a serious horse I think. Cliff’s Edge has gone enormous; it will be interesting to see what they do with him now. Blinkers on and back to the mile on Derby Day for the Carbine Club looks a nice scenario for him I reckon. Jury out on the likes of Eshtiraak, Aberro, Sunquest and Weather With You. I don’t think they have the class to be competitive in the big races going forward.

Race 4 – Suggested Bets – Spieth & The Quarterback

Winner: – Keen Array

Well this was just a train wreck of a race. Spieth didn’t turn up and the stewards report then indicated post race that Bryce Heys said the horse had an interrupted preparation coming in to the race and had blood taken on Thursday. Would have been nice to know before the race.

The Quarterback pulled up with internal bleeding. Just an awful race really. I couldn’t have backed Keen Array with stolen money but given a few of the more fancied runners didn’t rock up, Christmas came early for him. I won’t be backing Spieth again anytime soon while The Quarterback has now failed at his last few runs pretty badly, so the jury is out on him. Silent Sedition went through the line quite well. I was surprised she was so short in the market in all honesty. Her jump outs indicated she was probably going to need the run and she ran accordingly. Expect her to improve significantly second up rising in trip.

Race 6 – Suggested Bets – Bring Me Roses, Snogging & Pres De Toi

Winner: – Bring Me Roses

This was the only real cheer at Flemington aside from Winx in the Turnbull Stakes. Bring Me Roses got out to a ripper price of $17 and produced a big finish to win well. She has a lovely smothering run in behind the speed and worked into the clear at the right time but you still have to be impressed with how she sprinted clear late. She strikes me as a filly that will relish the distances continuing to rise and I think she is pretty handy.

Leather’n’lace has run well. She ended up finding a spot one out and one back which sounds good, but it actually worked to her detriment as the field slowed up and she was unable to use her speed which is her best asset. As such she was a bit of a sitting duck for the swoopers when she hit the front early in the straight. There were a couple of good other runs in the race too. Snogging didn’t have much luck, nor did Pure Scot and Pageantry after being held up last start was this time caught three wide with no cover, she is going better than the form guide will indicate. Hopefully a few of you had enough on Bring Me Roses to make up for the rest of the day.

Race 8 – Suggested Bets – Prompt Response, Eckstein, Ellicazoom & Petition

Winner: – Now Or Later

This was annoying. I had been on Now Or Later at all three of her Australian runs prior to this race. She hadn’t won either of them. I jumped off here and she salutes. To make matters worse I joked with a mate how we should save on it. We didn’t and it wins to scupper the Quaddie dreams. This was a messy race. They went slow early and it was a bit of a bunched finish with a few hard luck stories. Prompt Response and Eckstein were certainly two of those. I may have notced those more as I was on those two but both had little luck. Prompt Response in particular I think is going really well and I would be keen to follow her. I thought French Emotion hit the line well for future races while the jury is probably out a bit with Petition, Missrock and Euro Angel. I think they need to win again before I would be tumbling in.

Randwick

Race 1 – Suggested Bets – Regent & Sparky Lad

Winner: – Goodfella

The Randwick meeting started with a bit of a surprise winner in Goodfella. It was a surprise to me but not to all punters as he was quite firm in the market and attracted support at double figure odds. There really isn’t much more to say from the race. He sat three wide roiling on the speed with no cover doing it tough and still proved too good. It was a very good win. They all had their chance to beat him. Regent was plain and the jury has to be out on him given how easily Our Mantra ran past him while Sparky Lad also had every chance. The winner was just far too good and will probably be even better next start when he gets up to a mile. He could be a Carbine Club/Sandown Guineas horse potentially but still not totally sold on the strength of this race.

Race 3 – Suggested Bet – Interlocuter

Winner: – Interlocuter

I declared Interlocuter the best of the day and he duly saluted with ease. I was very surprised he got to $2.60 best tote. I honestly had him rated an even money chance. It was a pretty painless watch. He had to push his way into the clear coming around the home turn, but once he did that it was really a case of how far. It was a very easy win. There is really nothing else to say out of the race. I am keen to keep following Interlocuter, I think he will go through his grades and should come down to Melbourne and pick up a race or two at the tail end of the carnival. Fair to say had he not won, it would have been a very rough day.

Race 5 – Suggested Bets – Got Unders, Duca Valentinois, Shillelagh & All Our Roads

Winner: – Sir Plush

A good result for #TeamThey here with Sir Plush absolutely truckloaded into a short priced favourite and winning accordingly. They certainly look to have found the key to him. Get out in front and roll along and get his rivals chasing. He has done that at his last two starts and won really well. Admittedly this race was put on for him in many ways. He had race fitness on his side and a lot of his rivals were first up from a spell. I think the two horses to follow out of the race going forward are the Waller pair in Shillelagh and All Our Roads, in particular the latter.

All Our Roads was having his first Australian start and probably just needed to get clear a little bit earlier and might have been able to make things a bit more interesting at the finish. He trialled well leading into this first up run and I think he will be winning races this campaign. Shillelagh also trialled well leading into this first up run and I thought she went through the line really stylishly. Up to the mile and back against her own sex she can certainly be winning soon.

Race 7 – Spring Champion Stakes – Suggested Bets – Sanctioned & Sully

Winner: – Ace High

The theory didn’t come off for me here with hoping that Sanctioned could turn the tables on Ace High. I have to admit I did find the tactics on Sanctioned a little baffling. He went back to last from the wide draw and I just couldn’t see anyway he was going to win the race spotting Ace High that long a start. He may not have beat him anyway as it turned out but I would have loved to have seen him at least put himself in the race. He has still run OK, and I am not totally dropping off him yet.

Sully for mine is the horse to follow from a Derby point of view going forward. He really hit the line hard and looks to be ticking over really nicely. He just needs to show now that he can race as attractively the Melbourne way of going as he did up in Sydney. If he can then he should make his presence felt in the staying races in Melbourne. The top four put a margin on the rest of the field and I wouldn’t be going back too much further than that.

Race 8 – Suggested Bets – Dixie Blossoms, Imposing Lass & Dawn Wall

Winner: – Dixie Blossoms

The only saving grace here for me was that Daysee Doom didn’t win. If that happened I think I would have headed to the Bolte Bridge. It was another good result for #TeamThey with Dixie Blossoms getting a gun ride from Kerrin McEvoy and really finishing off strongly over the mile to overhaul her stable mate Daysee Doom who also ran really well. These two mares have clearly come back in very good form and are racing very well.

The Myer Classic on Derby Day is obviously their ultimate girl and providing they can maintain their form, both are going to be very hard to beat down here. Zenalicious continues to improve and her last two runs indicate that she might not be too far away from another win. The other good run in the race was the lightly raced Savapinski who I thought stuck on well. It was really all about the Ron Quinton mares though. I do think if Daysee Doom can draw a barrier next start and not have to be used from the gate she might be able to turn the tables on Dixie Blossoms.

Other Horse To Follow From The Meeting: – Firsthand

I had a tip for this horse in the last race and he has run outstandingly well. He was slow to begin which meant he got further back than normal and then he just had a little bit of trouble working into the clear in the straight. Once he did he really hit the line well and it was a run that indicated to me he could be in for a good preparation. Last campaign he got better the deeper he got into his campaign too so I am keen to follow him.
